In Uzirpur Upazila of Barishal, two assistant presiding officers at Habibpur Secondary School polling station have been dismissed following allegations of misconduct and attending a controversial political meeting during voting duties. The incident occurred on Wednesday at approximately 11:00 p.m., when the officers reportedly left the polling centre without authorisation.
The dismissed officers are as follows:
| Name | Position | Reason for Dismissal |
|---|---|---|
| Md. Obaidul Haq | Assistant Presiding Officer | Left centre without permission; attended meeting at Jamaat leader’s residence |
| Ayesha Akter | Assistant Presiding Officer | Left centre without permission; attended meeting at Jamaat leader’s residence |
Local sources confirmed that both officers left the polling centre and visited the residence of the local Jamaat Amir for a meeting. The incident was noticed by residents, who reported it to the Upazila administration. Upon receiving the report, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Ali Suja promptly arrived at the site and took the necessary action.
UNO Md. Ali Suja stated, “The allegations were verified, and as a result, they have been relieved of their duties. Replacement assistant presiding officers have been appointed. No officer is permitted to leave a polling centre without the presiding officer’s approval. These officers violated established procedures and are also accused of engaging with a political party, which is strictly prohibited.”
The dismissed officers have denied the accusations, asserting that they did not attend any political meetings. “We only stepped outside briefly to take food. The allegations against us are false,” they claimed.
Following the incident, administrative oversight at polling stations has been heightened. Newly appointed assistant presiding officers have ensured that operations and security at the centres are conducted more meticulously. The UNO emphasised, “All officials must adhere strictly to rules, and unauthorised departure or political engagement is not permitted under any circumstances.”
Residents have highlighted the importance of transparency and integrity in the election process. The administration has pledged to maintain strict monitoring of polling activities to prevent irregularities or any undue influence. The swift action by local authorities has been positively received by voters, reinforcing public confidence in the electoral process.
