Two Prisoners, Including Indian National, Die at Dhaka Hospital

Two prisoners, including an Indian national, have died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after being admitted in a critical condition. The deceased have been identified as Pintu Kumar, 34, and Hasem Kha Talukdar, 64.

According to hospital sources, Pintu Kumar passed away at approximately 1:00 pm on Thursday, 19 March. Almost ten minutes later, Hasem Kha Talukdar also succumbed to his illness. Both had been brought to the hospital’s emergency department in a seriously unwell state. Medical personnel conducted the necessary examinations and tests before officially declaring them deceased.

Inspector Md. Faruk, in charge of the hospital police outpost, confirmed the deaths and stated that both bodies have been preserved in the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.

Hasem Kha Talukdar was a resident of Rampur village in Netrokona Sadar Upazila and the son of Abdus Salam Goni. Pintu Kumar, the Indian national, was the son of Alok Kumar. The exact circumstances leading to their deteriorating health prior to admission have not been publicly disclosed, and authorities have indicated that further investigation may follow.

The deaths highlight ongoing concerns regarding the health and welfare of prisoners, particularly those with pre-existing conditions or those facing delayed medical attention. In recent years, medical facilities within detention centres have been criticised for inadequate resources, resulting in transfers to hospitals like DMCH when conditions worsen.

Details of the Deceased Prisoners

Pintu Kumar 34 Indian Alok Kumar India 19 March, 1:00 pm
Hasem Kha Talukdar 64 Bangladeshi Abdus Salam Goni Rampur, Netrokona Sadar, Bangladesh 19 March, 1:10 pm

Hospital officials reiterated that standard procedures for post-mortem and further inquiry are being followed. Law enforcement authorities are monitoring the situation closely to determine if any additional measures are necessary.

The incident has drawn attention to the challenges faced by prisoners with serious health issues, especially when access to timely medical care is limited. Families of the deceased have been notified, and arrangements are being made for the repatriation of Pintu Kumar’s body to India.
