U2 Release Surprise EP Tackling Global Conflicts

Published: 20 Feb 2026, 06:05 am

The legendary Irish rock band U2 has stunned the music world by releasing a surprise Extended Play (EP) titled Days of Ash. Arriving without any prior marketing or announcement on Wednesday, the six-track collection marks a significant return to the band’s roots as purveyors of raw, politically charged anthems.

This new body of work is deeply rooted in contemporary global struggles, weaving together themes of justice, loss, and the harrowing realities of war. It represents the band's first major release of original thematic material since their 2017 studio album, Songs of Experience.

A Sonic Protest

The EP’s emotional centrepiece is a four-minute track titled "American Obituary." The song serves as a scathing tribute to Renee Good, an individual tragically killed by an agent of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Through the lyrics, lead singer Bono delivers a poignant protest against systemic violence and the fragility of the "American Dream."

Beyond American borders, the EP looks toward the Middle East and Eastern Europe. In a striking creative choice, the band has set the poem "Wildpeace" by the renowned Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai to music. The remaining tracks provide a sonic landscape for the ongoing crises in Gaza, Iran, and Ukraine.

Collaborative Resilience

The track "Yours Eternally" features a high-profile collaboration that bridges mainstream pop with the frontlines of war. British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran joins forces with U2 and Ukrainian rock star Taras Topolia. Topolia, the frontman of the band Antytila, notably served on the frontlines in the defence of Ukraine against the Russian invasion, lending the track an unparalleled sense of authenticity and urgency.

Perspectives from the Band

Speaking on the release, Bono described the EP as a necessary emotional outlet for the band. "These are songs of protest, frustration, and lament," he explained. "The songs of celebration will follow—we are currently working on those—but for now, these stories needed to be told."

Bassist Adam Clayton echoed this sentiment, expressing his enthusiasm for the band's renewed vigour. "I am thrilled with these new tracks. They feel vital, and they have arrived exactly at the right moment," he noted.

In a move that underscores the EP’s humanitarian mission, U2 has partnered with several global advocacy groups for this release, including the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Amnesty International, and the UNHCR.
