Barcelona has received UEFA approval to play a La Liga match against Villarreal in Miami, marking a rare instance of a Spanish domestic league fixture being held outside Spain. The request for this arrangement was submitted by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), and UEFA granted permission despite expressing reluctance.
UEFA stated in a Monday release that the decision was taken under exceptional circumstances. The governing body highlighted that FIFA’s existing framework for such matches is not sufficiently detailed and lacks explicit guidance.
UEFA emphasised that, as a principle, it opposes domestic league matches being played outside the country of origin, but in this instance, the decision was made to accommodate the request.
The approval is not limited to Barcelona. UEFA has also allowed AC Milan to play a Serie A match against Como in Perth, Australia next February.
Both fixtures, however, still require final clearance from FIFA before they can be officially staged abroad.
The plan to hold Barcelona’s La Liga match in Miami faced strong opposition from European supporters’ groups. Real Madrid publicly objected to the proposal a day after RFEF granted its approval in August.
Similarly, AC Milan’s overseas fixture has generated debate because it forces a domestic league match to be played outside Italy.
| Club | Competition | Opponent | Location | Approval | Notes |
| Barcelona | La Liga | Villarreal | Miami, USA | UEFA approved | Initially approved by RFEF in August; facing fan opposition |
| AC Milan | Serie A | Como | Perth, Australia | UEFA approved | FIGC approved in July; clashes with Winter Olympics opening |
This approval allows Barcelona and AC Milan to proceed with their respective overseas matches, subject to FIFA’s final confirmation, while igniting ongoing debate over the future of domestic leagues abroad.
