The new season of Europe’s premier club competition, the UEFA Champions League, has officially kicked off. On the opening day, giant clubs such as Real Madrid and Arsenal enjoyed successful starts, while Juventus and Borussia Dortmund delivered a breathtaking encounter, ending in a 4–4 draw in a high-octane eight-goal thriller.
Real Madrid 2–1 Olympique Marseille
At the Santiago Bernabéu, hosts Real Madrid faced a stern challenge from French side Marseille. Maintaining 43% possession, Los Blancos took 28 shots, 15 of which were on target, testing Marseille goalkeeper Jérôme Rué intensely. However, both of Real Madrid’s goals came from penalties taken by Kylian Mbappé. In addition, star defender Dani Carvajal received a red card in the 72nd minute for a reckless challenge on the goalkeeper.
Marseille, taking 15 shots with five on target, managed to break Real’s defence when Tim Weah received a pass from Greenwood and struck a powerful shot, leaving the Bernabéu stunned. Early in the match, in the fifth minute, Real centre-back Trent Alexander-Arnold had to leave the field due to injury, and Carvajal, who replaced him, later received the red card. Despite dominating in attack, Real’s two goals at 28 and 81 minutes came solely from successful penalties by Mbappé, who was named man of the match.
Arsenal 2–0 Athletic Bilbao
English giants Arsenal triumphed 2–0 away at San Mamés against Athletic Bilbao, with both goals coming in the second half. The deadlock was broken in the 72nd minute when substitute Gabriel Martinelli scored, followed by Leandro Trossard’s goal in the 87th minute. Arsenal enjoyed 62% possession and managed six shots on target from 11 attempts.
Earlier in the match, Victor Gyo Keres suffered a head injury following a collision with a teammate and played with a bandage until the 65th minute. Trossard, who replaced him, delivered a brilliant pass to Martinelli, who calmly finished past the goalkeeper. Trossard later scored himself, with Martinelli providing the assist for a perfect exchange between the two forwards.
Juventus 4–4 Borussia Dortmund
At Turin’s Allianz Stadium, Juventus nearly saw their home advantage undone by Borussia Dortmund in an electrifying match. Until the 70th minute, the contest remained tightly contested, with Juventus taking the lead only to be equalised moments later by Dortmund. By the 90th minute, Dortmund were ahead 4–2, but two remarkable goals in stoppage time allowed the Italian side to share the spoils.
Despite eight goals in total, the first half had ended goalless. Karim Adeyemi broke the deadlock for Dortmund with a powerful strike from outside the box in the 52nd minute. Juventus equalised in the 63rd minute through a brilliant goal by Kenan Illdiz. Dortmund regained the lead two minutes later with another long-range strike from Felix Kalu Enmecha. Juventus equalised again in the 67th minute via Dušan Vlahović. Dortmund then surged ahead with goals from Yanni Couto in the 74th minute and Rami Bensebaini from a penalty in the 86th minute.
In stoppage time, Juventus staged a stunning comeback. Vlahović received a cross and scored, followed moments later by Lloyd Kelly heading in a final goal from a Serbian forward’s cross. The last-minute strike salvaged a draw and sent Juventus fans into jubilant celebration.
