British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that his government is prepared to take a “leading role” in the reconstruction of Gaza, during a summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, on Monday. This was confirmed in a Downing Street statement released on Sunday.
Starmer is expected to announce £20 million ($26.7 million) in humanitarian aid as part of a wider commitment to assist Gaza. The funding will focus on restoring water, sanitation, and hygiene services that have been severely damaged over the course of two years of conflict.
He will attend the summit, chaired by US President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, following the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas on Friday.
“Today is the first, crucial phase of ending this war and now we must deliver the second phase, in full,” Starmer is expected to say at the summit, according to the Downing Street press release.
The UK government has also announced it will host a three-day conference on Gaza’s recovery and reconstruction. The conference aims to develop postwar recovery plans and support the transformation of the Palestinian Authority.
| Aspect | Details |
| Conference duration | 3 days |
| Participants | Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Palestinian Authority, private sector, international development financiers |
| Focus | Gaza reconstruction, postwar planning, Palestinian Authority transformation |
| Date | Not yet announced |
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper highlighted the urgency and importance of the initiative: “Gaza has been completely devastated. The ceasefire gives us the opportunity not just to urgently scale up humanitarian efforts but also to look to the future of Gaza’s recovery.”
She added that the UK will convene different parties, drawing on expertise, experience, and investment from the City of London to support reconstruction.
The UK aims to use its position to bring together international partners and leverage both public and private sector resources for Gaza. Starmer’s announcements signal the UK’s commitment to humanitarian relief, long-term reconstruction, and regional stability, following years of devastating conflict.
The conference and funding initiatives underscore the UK’s intention to actively participate in rebuilding Gaza, ensuring that both infrastructure and governance receive focused international support.
