UK Records Highest Number of Asylum Applications

Britain has received a record-breaking number of asylum applications, official data revealed on Thursday, intensifying pressure on the government regarding the housing of thousands of migrants in hotels.

According to figures released by the Home Office, a total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year ending June 2025. This is the highest annual total recorded since official records began in 2001.

Asylum and Immigration Overview

Category Data / Information
Total asylum applications (Year to June 2025) 111,084

Immigration remains a contentious issue in Britain, where Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under pressure from the hard-right Reform UK party, led by anti-immigrant figure Nigel Farage.

The opposition is highlighting Labour’s continued practice of accommodating asylum seekers in hotels, a method that reached its peak under the previous Conservative government.

Migrants in Hotels

  • As of June 2025, 32,059 migrants were housed in hotels across the UK.
  • This represents an 8 percent increase compared to the same period last year, shortly before Starmer assumed office.
  • However, the number is significantly lower than the 56,042 migrants recorded in September 2023.

Channel Crossings and Irregular Arrivals

  • Since July 2024, over 50,000 people have crossed the English Channel on rudimentary small boats, raising serious safety concerns.
  • According to Thursday’s data, irregular arrivals surged 27 percent year-on-year, with 88 percent of arrivals via small boats.
  • The Home Office and the Prime Minister are facing increasing scrutiny over the failure to curb irregular migration.

The figures underline the growing challenge of managing migration in the UK, as political pressure mounts and public concern rises over the safety and accommodation of asylum seekers.
