Ukraine has lost its first French-supplied Mirage 2000 fighter jet during an operational mission, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on Wednesday. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, with the pilot successfully ejecting from the aircraft and surviving without serious injury.
Zelensky Confirms Aircraft Loss
In a public address early Wednesday, President Zelensky announced:
“Unfortunately, we lost our combat aircraft. A French aircraft, very effective, one of our Mirage jets.”
He further clarified that the jet was not downed by Russian forces, stating:
“The pilot managed to escape and it was not shot down by the Russians.”
Ukrainian Air Force: No Ground Casualties
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the crash occurred during a scheduled flight mission. The pilot had reported a technical fault before executing a controlled ejection.
“The pilot reported a failure of aviation equipment to the flight director. He then acted competently, as is expected in a crisis situation, and successfully ejected,”

Details of the Mirage 2000 Deployment
The Mirage 2000, a French-designed supersonic multirole fighter, was supplied by France as part of a broader effort to bolster Ukraine’s air defence capabilities against persistent Russian aerial assaults.

Ukrainian pilots and ground crews have received training in eastern France to operate and maintain the jets, which have also been adapted to counter Russian electronic jamming systems.
Military Impact
The crash represents a setback for Ukraine’s already stretched air force, which continues to face a critical shortage of air defence systems amid ongoing Russian missile and drone attacks.
Though the loss of a single aircraft may appear isolated, Ukraine’s limited fleet of Western-supplied fighter jets means each airframe is of high tactical value.
The safe recovery of the pilot, however, stands as a testament to the effectiveness of Ukrainian training protocols and the emergency systems onboard the Mirage 2000.
