Ukraine Reports Russian Drone Strike on Civilian Bus, Killing Three

A Russian drone attack on Sunday targeted a civilian bus in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region, resulting in the deaths of three women and leaving several others injured, according to local Ukrainian officials.

The Sumy regional prosecutor’s office confirmed the incident via Telegram, sharing images of the heavily damaged vehicle.

“The enemy attacked a civilian bus with a drone in the afternoon,” the statement read.
“Three civilians — women aged between 66 and 78 — were killed.”

The attack is part of an intensifying Russian aerial campaign, which has seen a record number of drones and missiles launched at Ukrainian cities in recent weeks, resulting in numerous civilian casualties.

Wider Escalation and Retaliation

Ukraine has also escalated its retaliatory drone strikes inside Russian territory. In one such incident in Russia’s northwestern Leningrad region, a man was killed in a fire caused by debris from a Ukrainian drone, according to the region’s governor Aleksandr Drozdenko.

“Three others were injured,” he added in a Telegram post.

Diplomatic Stalemate

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has renewed his call for direct peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, proposing a summit by the end of August. However, on Thursday, the Kremlin dismissed the likelihood of any such meeting taking place soon.

The ongoing diplomatic impasse is underscored by:

• Russia’s demand that Ukraine cede four regions which Moscow claims to have annexed — a stance Kyiv categorically rejects.
• Ukraine’s accusation that Russia is sending only low-level officials with no authority to previous negotiation attempts.

Ukraine’s Ongoing Appeal to Western Allies

As Russia intensifies its daily bombardment, Ukraine has urged Western countries to provide more advanced weaponry to bolster its defences and hold ground on the battlefield.
