United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has assured Bangladesh of the UN’s full support as the country undergoes key reforms and transitions.
“As the country undergoes important reforms and transition, you can count on the UN to help build a sustainable and equitable future for all,” Guterres wrote on X (formerly Twitter) following his meeting with Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus in Tejgaon earlier today.
The UN chief also expressed gratitude to Prof. Yunus, the interim government, and the people of Bangladesh for their warm hospitality.
Later in the day, Guterres and Prof. Yunus traveled to Cox’s Bazar, where they are set to join Rohingya refugees for iftar. More than a million Rohingya have taken shelter in Bangladesh after fleeing a brutal military crackdown in Myanmar in 2017.
Earlier in the morning, Guterres met with Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain and Khalilur Rahman, high representative to the Chief Adviser on Rohingya issues and priority affairs. Discussions focused on Bangladesh’s ongoing reform process, the country’s strong partnership with the UN, and its humanitarian efforts for the Rohingya community.
A UN readout of the meeting highlighted Guterres’ appreciation for Bangladesh’s generosity in hosting Rohingya refugees and reaffirmed his solidarity with the nation’s reform efforts.
The secretary-general also thanked Bangladesh for its longstanding commitment to UN peacekeeping missions.
Additionally, Guterres and Khalilur Rahman discussed the situation in Myanmar’s Rakhine State and the upcoming High-Level Conference on Rohingya and other minorities in Myanmar.
