UN Warns: Sudan’s Civil War Spiraling Out of Control

The civil war in Sudan is spiraling out of control, according to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, who urged all parties to immediately cease hostilities and violence.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the World Summit for Social Development in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday, Guterres expressed deep concern over the worsening situation.

He said that El Fasher and surrounding areas in North Darfur have become epicenters of hunger, violence, and displacement. Since the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took control of El Fasher, conditions have deteriorated further. Millions of civilians remain trapped under siege, suffering from malnutrition, disease, and ongoing violence.

Meanwhile, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) held discussions on Tuesday regarding the U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal. The talks focused on potential conditions for implementing the truce, including the withdrawal of the RSF from Sudanese cities—particularly El Fasher.

Analysts believe that a lack of trust between SAF and RSF could make any ceasefire temporary, further complicating the path to lasting peace.

For the past 18 months, fighting between SAF and the UAE-backed Rapid Support Forces has continued, described by the United Nations as one of the worst humanitarian crises of the 21st century. The conflict has claimed over 150,000 lives and displaced more than 14 million people.

Last week, RSF forces captured El Fasher in Darfur, and videos surfaced online showing RSF troops firing at civilians. Prosecutors from the International Criminal Court said they are gathering evidence of genocide, rape, and other war crimes committed in the area. Source: The gardian
