Authorities recovered the body of an unidentified young man, estimated to be around 30 years old, from the Turag River in Tongi, Gazipur, on Tuesday, 17 March. The discovery took place at approximately 12:00 pm near the Sandarpara area along the Tongi stretch of the river.
Local residents reported spotting the body floating in the river and immediately alerted the river police. Responding swiftly, officers retrieved the body and transferred it to the morgue of Dhaka’s Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
The deceased was wearing a simple vest (commonly known as a “genji”) and a pair of trousers at the time of recovery. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and police are investigating whether foul play was involved.
Tongi River Police Station’s officer-in-charge, Sub-Inspector Kazi Newaz, confirmed that the body had been secured and sent for autopsy. He added that a case is in the process of being filed, as authorities seek to establish the man’s identity and the events leading to his death.
The incident has caused concern among residents in the Sandarpara area, who expressed shock over the discovery. While river-related accidents are not uncommon in the region, authorities emphasised the importance of community vigilance and timely reporting of any suspicious activity.
