MIAMI, 28 March 2025 (BSS/AFP) – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to intensifying diplomatic efforts to end the war in Sudan, following fresh violence, including clashes in the capital, Khartoum.

Speaking to reporters on his flight home to Miami after a visit to the Caribbean, Rubio emphasised that the United States was actively engaged in discussions with international stakeholders to explore solutions to the ongoing conflict.

“We are deeply concerned that Sudan is at risk of reverting to the instability we witnessed less than a decade ago,” Rubio stated. “That is something we must work to prevent. We are engaging with our partners and seeking their perspectives on how best to move forward.”

Rubio revealed that he had recently held talks with key regional leaders, including Kenyan President William Ruto and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, both of whom have been involved in mediation efforts aimed at resolving the crisis.

The war in Sudan erupted nearly two years ago due to a bitter power struggle between the leaders of the country’s regular army and the powerful paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has since resulted in a catastrophic humanitarian crisis, with millions displaced and reports of widespread atrocities committed by both sides.

Rubio’s predecessor, Antony Blinken, had made significant efforts to broker peace, including dispatching a special envoy to facilitate negotiations. However, despite multiple rounds of talks, Blinken ultimately expressed frustration at the failure to reach a settlement, condemning both factions for prolonging the violence and disregarding humanitarian concerns.

The United States, alongside regional and international partners, continues to push for a lasting resolution to the crisis. However, with escalating hostilities and limited diplomatic progress, the path to peace in Sudan remains fraught with challenges.
