A tragic incident shook the Islamic University (IU) campus on Wednesday afternoon when Assistant Professor Asma Sadia Runa, Chairperson of the Department of Social Welfare, was fatally stabbed in her office. The news was confirmed by Dr. Imam Hossain, the Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Kushtia Sadar Hospital.
The attack occurred at approximately 4:00 PM on 4 March inside the Social Welfare Department office, located within the Faculty of Theology and Islamic Studies. Reports indicate that a departmental staff member, Fazlur Rahman, was also found in the same room attempting self-harm. Several students witnessed the latter incident.
Both individuals were immediately transported to Kushtia Sadar Hospital in critical condition. Despite medical intervention, Assistant Professor Runa succumbed to her injuries, while the condition of Fazlur Rahman remains under close observation.
The incident prompted swift action from the university’s Proctorial Board and local law enforcement. Members of the IU Proctorial Body, along with officers from IU Police Station, arrived at the scene to recover the victims and secure the area. Authorities are currently investigating the motives behind this shocking act.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the stabbing unfolded within the department chairperson’s office itself, raising serious concerns about campus security protocols. University officials have expressed their condolences and called for calm among students and faculty members.
