U.S. directive: Citizens should leave Iran immediately

Published: 06 Feb 2026, 12:42 pm

Amid growing fears of a potential military confrontation between the United States and Iran, Washington has issued an urgent advisory, instructing all American citizens currently in Iran to leave the country without delay. This announcement comes on the eve of high-stakes diplomatic talks between the two nations scheduled to take place in Oman on Friday, 6 February.

According to reports from Iran International and India Today, the United States government has expressed deep concern over the security situation in Iran, citing “escalating risks, disruptions to travel, and unreliable communication systems” as factors that could seriously endanger the safety of its citizens. The advisory specifically urged Americans to prepare to leave Iran independently, without relying on U.S. government assistance.

The U.S. Virtual Embassy in Iran highlighted that current conditions—including restrictions on communications and uncertain transport links—pose “a significant threat to the security of U.S. citizens.” These warnings coincide with renewed diplomatic engagement, as officials confirm that formal U.S.-Iran nuclear negotiations are set to resume for the first time in approximately nine months. The talks are scheduled to commence at 10:00 a.m. Oman time in Muscat. Analysts suggest that, despite heightened security concerns, both nations appear to be signalling a willingness to explore diplomatic avenues.

Recent developments, including the Iranian government’s violent crackdown on anti-government protests, have escalated tensions and prompted this round of discussions. Initially, uncertainty over the venue and scope of the talks raised fears that the negotiations might fail before they even began. Regional mediators have been actively involved, with the dialogue viewed as part of broader efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East.

The United States has outlined several key objectives for the negotiations, including the suspension of Iran’s nuclear programme and a reduction in its stockpile of enriched uranium. U.S. officials have also insisted that discussions address Iran’s ballistic missile programme, its support for regional armed groups, and human rights concerns. Iran, however, has stated that the talks will focus solely on its nuclear activities, leaving several points of disagreement unresolved.

The situation remains highly volatile, with U.S. President Donald Trump warning of potential military action should the talks fail to produce a timely agreement. Iran has responded with its own threats, vowing to use force in retaliation and targeting American military assets in the Middle East, including Israel.

The upcoming delegation includes Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, who has already arrived in Muscat. Representing the United States will be Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, alongside Jared Kushner, senior adviser to President Trump.
