US envoy Steve Witkoff met on Saturday with grieving relatives of Israeli hostages still held in Gaza, as tensions and fears intensify nearly 22 months into the war.

Witkoff, welcomed by hundreds of protesters in Tel Aviv, was greeted with both applause and emotional appeals for help before entering a closed-door meeting with members of the Hostages and Missing Families Forum.

Videos circulated online showing the envoy’s arrival, as families chanted:

“Bring them home!”
“We need your help!”

This meeting followed Witkoff’s visit to a US-supported humanitarian aid station in Gaza, where he inspected relief efforts.

Emotional Pleas from Families

Yotam Cohen, brother of 21-year-old hostage Nimrod Cohen, told AFP:

“The war must end. The Israeli government refuses to do it willingly… It must be stopped—for us, for our hostages, for future generations.”

According to the Israeli military, of the 251 hostages taken during the Hamas-led attack, 49 remain in captivity, including 27 believed to be dead.

After the meeting, the Forum issued a statement revealing that Witkoff had given a personal assurance that both he and former US President Donald Trump would work to ensure the return of the remaining captives.

Hamas Videos and Accusations of Starvation

On Friday, Hamas released another video of 24-year-old hostage Evyatar David, depicting him visibly malnourished inside a tunnel.

  • The video called for a ceasefire and warned that time was running out.
  • David’s family decried the footage as part of a “vile propaganda campaign” and accused Hamas of deliberate starvation.

“The deliberate starvation of our son to serve propaganda purposes is one of the most horrifying acts the world has seen,” the family said.

International Reaction

Leader Response
Jean-Noël Barrot (French Foreign Minister) Condemned the hostage videos as “despicable”
Posted on X “They must be freed, without conditions… Hamas must be disarmed and excluded from ruling Gaza.”

The US, Egypt, and Qatar had been mediating ceasefire negotiations to facilitate both hostage releases and humanitarian access. However, those talks collapsed last month

Netanyahu Under Pressure

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is now facing:

  • Domestic pressure to rescue the hostages.
  • International pressure to open Gaza’s borders for greater food aid access, as the UN and aid groups warn over 2 million Palestinians are at risk of famine

Military Standpoint

Israeli military chief Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir made it clear:

“If no agreement is reached in the coming days, combat will continue without rest.”

He also dismissed accusations that Israel was causing starvation:

“The claim of deliberate starvation is a timed, deceitful effort to label the IDF—a moral army—as war criminals.”

Yet, independent UN experts and humanitarian reports tell a different story

Humanitarian Crisis on the Ground

Testimonies from within Gaza highlight the severe malnutrition crisis:

Name Details
Modallala Dawwas (33) Resident of a displacement camp in Gaza City
Daughter Mariam Dropped from 25kg (4 stone) to 10kg (1.5 stone) during the war
Condition Now suffering from extreme malnourishment, though previously healthy

As ceasefire hopes dwindle and international outrage grows, both the plight of the hostages and the Palestinian civilians highlight the immense human cost of the ongoing conflict.
