US Envoy to Discuss Finalising Gaza Aid ‘Corridor’: State Department

The United States announced on Tuesday that a senior envoy will travel to Europe this week for critical discussions focused on achieving a ceasefire and finalising a humanitarian aid “corridor” for war-torn Gaza, where famine is increasingly reported and authorities say civilians are dying of starvation.

Steve Witkoff, an international negotiator under former President Donald Trump, has been tasked with the mission, according to US officials speaking on condition of anonymity. Witkoff is expected to begin talks in a European city and may subsequently travel to the Middle East to advance diplomatic efforts.

Humanitarian Corridor and Ceasefire Hopes

According to US State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce, Witkoff’s trip is undertaken with “a strong hope that we will come forward with another ceasefire as well as a humanitarian corridor for aid to flow — that both sides have in fact agreed to.”

Bruce, however, declined to provide further specifics regarding the location, timeline, or logistics of the proposed corridor. She also refrained from directly connecting the initiative to the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) — a project supported by both Israel and the United States.

The GHF, launched in late May, has been marred by violent confrontations and chaos, as desperate civilians attempt to access basic food and supplies. Human rights groups and aid organisations have condemned the scenes, some of which have resulted in lethal force being used against civilians.

Reported Civilian Deaths at Aid Sites

On Tuesday, the United Nations issued a grim report stating that Israeli forces had killed over 1,000 Palestinian civilians while attempting to collect humanitarian aid since the GHF began its operations.

Mounting Global Pressure

The announcement of Witkoff’s mission comes amid mounting global concern over the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Aid groups and international bodies have called for urgent, unhindered access for relief workers and supplies.

While the State Department highlighted the dual goals of the mission — pushing forward a ceasefire and ensuring humanitarian access — it remains unclear how the newly proposed corridor will differ operationally from the GHF, which has so far failed to deliver aid without bloodshed.

As of now, no ceasefire agreement has been officially announced, but US officials remain cautiously optimistic that diplomacy may yield a tangible breakthrough.
