WASHINGTON, 28th February 2025 (BSS/AFP) – On Thursday, US Attorney General Pam Bondi released a batch of declassified files related to the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was accused of sex trafficking and other serious offences before his death by suicide in 2019.
Bondi stated that the release of these files was part of the commitment to transparency made by US President Donald Trump. However, the documents did not appear to reveal any new information, as many had already been leaked previously. The Department of Justice affirmed that much of the content had been made public before.
“This Department of Justice is fulfilling President Trump’s pledge to transparency and shedding light on the vile actions of Jeffrey Epstein and his accomplices,” said Bondi in a statement.
The newly released documents included an evidence list, flight plans, and a contact book, which appeared to be linked to the trial of Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s former associate. Maxwell, who was convicted of sex crimes in 2021, has been serving a 20-year prison sentence in New York since 2022.
Bondi explained that her department had initially received 200 pages of documents in response to a request for “full and complete” files on Epstein. However, the Department of Justice later revealed that thousands of additional pages related to Epstein’s investigation and indictment had not been previously disclosed.
Bondi has now called on the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the leadership of Trump appointee Kash Patel, to provide the remaining documents by Friday morning.
Epstein, a financier with significant connections both within the United States and internationally, faced numerous allegations of sexually abusing young girls. His prosecution was cut short when he died by hanging in his New York prison cell in August 2019.
He and Maxwell were accused of operating a sex trafficking ring for nearly three decades.
The unsealing of documents in the case revealed the names of several prominent politicians, celebrities, and business figures, which fuelled widespread conspiracy theories surrounding his death. However, both the US Department of Justice and the FBI found no evidence of foul play in Epstein’s death.
A 2023 report by the Department of Justice’s Inspector General did, however, highlight “negligence, misconduct, and outright job performance failures” that contributed to the conditions that allowed Epstein to take his own life.
