US auto safety regulators have launched an investigation into the 2021 Tesla Model Y following complaints that parents were unable to open the vehicle from the outside, according to a statement reviewed by AFP on Tuesday.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it had received nine separate complaints, including incidents in which a parent could not retrieve a child placed in the rear seats.
“Entrapment in a vehicle is particularly concerning in emergency situations, such as when children are trapped in a hot vehicle,” the NHTSA stated.
Reported Incidents
| Incident | Description | Outcome |
| 1-4 | Parents unable to open rear doors | Parents broke a window to regain access |
| 5-9 | Doors malfunctioned | No additional details provided |
While Tesla vehicles are equipped with manual door releases inside the cabin, the NHTSA noted that children may not be able to operate them effectively.
A preliminary review suggests the problem may occur when the electronic door lock receives insufficient voltage. However, surveys of Tesla owners indicated that no low voltage battery warnings were reported during these incidents.
The NHTSA has therefore opened a “preliminary evaluation” to assess the scope and severity of this potential safety risk.
“The evaluation will help determine whether further action, including recalls or safety notices, is warranted,” the agency said.
The investigation highlights growing concerns over electric vehicle safety systems, particularly regarding child entrapment and emergency access.
