Victory for Rumin Farhana by a wide margin

Published: 13 Feb 2026, 09:52 am

In the Brahmanbaria-2 constituency, encompassing Sarail, Ashuganj, and parts of Bijoynagar, independent candidate Rumin Farhana achieved a decisive victory, winning by a margin of 37,568 votes over her closest rival. Running under the Goose (Hāns) symbol, she garnered widespread support across the constituency.

According to unofficial results announced by Assistant Returning Officer Abu Bakar Sarker at midnight on Thursday, 12 February, Farhana received 117,495 votes out of 151 polling centres, comfortably surpassing her nearest competitor, Maulana Junaid Al Habib of the BNP alliance, who contested under the Date Palm (Khejurgach) symbol and obtained 79,927 votes.

Voting and Turnout Details

The total number of registered voters in Brahmanbaria-2 stood at 499,448, with voter turnout recorded at 44.8%. Election day proceeded largely without incident, though minor disruptions were reported at a few centres.

Election Incidents

While voting was mostly smooth, minor clashes occurred between campaign supporters at one polling centre, causing a temporary five-minute suspension of voting. Additionally, tensions arose at two other centres regarding candidate visits.

Tragically, at Syed Sirajul Islam Milonayatan polling station in Kacharipara, Sarail, Mohammad Mujahidul Islam, a 48-year-old polling officer, collapsed around 8:00 a.m. at Booth 2. Despite immediate efforts by bystanders and subsequent transfer to the Upazila Health Complex, he was pronounced dead by medical staff.

Candidates Overview

Though nine candidates initially contested the election, only eight remained in the race, following the withdrawal of former Jatiya Party MP Ziaul Haque Mridha on the preceding Sunday. The main contest centred around Rumin Farhana (Goose) and Maulana Junaid Al Habib (Date Palm).

The significant victory margin underscores Farhana’s popularity and her ability to mobilise voters across the three sub-districts, marking a notable success for an independent candidate in a constituency traditionally dominated by party-affiliated contenders.
