Victory in Record-Breaking Match Secures Series for India

After a disappointing loss to New Zealand in the home ODI series, India showcased their dominance in the T20 format, finishing the series with a resounding victory. On Saturday, 31 January, India amassed a formidable 271 runs in the fifth and final T20I. In response, New Zealand were bowled out for 225, handing India a 46-run win and sealing the series 4–1.

This match was historic in multiple ways, as the Indian team broke several records on the day. The 271-run total is now the third-highest score in international T20 cricket. India has also extended its tally of 250+ scores in T20 internationals to four innings, the most by any team, previously shared with Zimbabwe.

The Indian batsmen hit 23 sixes in the match, the highest in a T20I innings by a full-member nation, a record previously matched only once by South Africa against India in Johannesburg in 2024. Across the entire series, India struck 69 sixes, setting a world record for the most sixes in a bilateral T20 series. The series as a whole saw 116 sixes, with New Zealand contributing 47, making it the third-highest total in any bilateral T20 series.

Ishan Kishan was the star of the final encounter, smashing a scintillating 42-ball century, which stands as the fastest T20I century against New Zealand and the fifth-fastest century for India in T20Is.

Meanwhile, captain Suryakumar Yadav reached 3,000 international T20 runs in just 1,822 balls, surpassing the previous record of 1,947 balls set by Mohammad Wasim of the UAE, making him the fastest in T20 internationals to achieve the milestone.

On the bowling front, Jasprit Bumrah endured a rare expensive spell, conceding 58 runs in four overs, marking his costliest T20I bowling figures. His 14th over alone went for 22 runs, the most he has ever given in a single over in international T20 cricket.

The following table summarises key statistical highlights from India’s record-setting series:

Record / Achievement Detail
Highest T20I innings total (India) 271 runs
Total sixes by India (series) 69
Total sixes in series (India vs NZ) 116
Ishan Kishan fastest century 42 balls vs NZ
Suryakumar Yadav fastest 3,000 T20I runs 1,822 balls
Most sixes in single T20I innings (India) 23
Jasprit Bumrah most expensive over 22 runs

India’s comprehensive T20 performance not only salvaged pride after the ODI loss but also firmly established the team’s dominance in the shortest format. With batters in sublime form and records tumbling, the series will be remembered as a milestone in India’s T20 cricket history.
