Violence Erupts in Bauphal as BNP-Jamaat Clashes Leave Fifty Injured

In the riverine reaches of Patuakhali-2, the political atmosphere has turned febrile following a series of violent altercations between activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. The skirmishes, which began on Sunday afternoon in the remote Chandradwip Union, have reportedly left at least 50 individuals injured, sparking widespread tension across the Bauphal Upazila.

An Ambush in Chandradwip

The violence originated near Bhandari Bazar at approximately 1:00 pm. Witnesses report that supporters of Shafiqul Islam (Masud), the 11-party alliance candidate contesting under the Dhopalla (scales) symbol, were returning from a peaceful procession. As the marchers neared the bazaar, they were allegedly ambushed from behind by a mob of 40 to 50 individuals armed with sticks and sharp domestic weapons.

Local sources identified the alleged leaders of the assault as Anwar Hossain, the Chandradwip Union Volunteers Party (Sechchasebak Dal) Convener, and Kalam Howlader, the Workers Party (Sramik Dal) Convener. The ensuing melee left approximately 40 Jamaat activists wounded and forced the procession to scatter in disarray.

Escalation and Retaliation

The unrest quickly spread from the rural outskirts to the Upazila headquarters. At 3:45 pm, Jamaat supporters organised a protest march on Hospital Road to denounce the morning’s ambush. During this demonstration, a BNP supporter named Shamim was allegedly accosted and his mobile phone confiscated. This sparked a secondary confrontation as BNP loyalists rushed to the scene, resulting in further hand-to-hand combat and another 10 injuries.

Casualty Overview and Medical Response

The local healthcare infrastructure has been stretched thin by the influx of casualties. Out of the 50 injured, 25 required immediate hospitalisation.

Patient Name Affiliation Condition Transfer Status
Anisur Rahman Jamaat (Union Ameer) Stable Admitted to Bauphal Complex
Lia Jahan Jamaat Activist Critical Transferred to Barishal (SBMCH)
Jamal Mridha Jamaat Activist Critical Transferred to Barishal (SBMCH)
Delowar Hossain BNP Supporter Serious Transferred to Barishal (SBMCH)

Political Fallout and Police Response

The Secretary of Chandradwip Union Jamaat, Aminul Islam, condemned the attacks as a “premeditated conspiracy” designed to intimidate voters. In a show of defiance, hundreds of Jamaat supporters besieged the road in front of the Bauphal Police Station, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the Officer-in-Charge (OC) for failing to prevent the violence. The blockade lasted until early evening, with protesters chanting slogans against the local administration.

Conversely, the accused BNP leaders, Anwar Hossain and Kamal Howlader, have strenuously denied any involvement, dismissing the allegations as politically motivated fabrications.

“We have deployed additional police personnel to the station and key areas of the town to maintain order. The higher authorities are monitoring the situation with the utmost gravity,” stated Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman, the Officer-in-Charge of Bauphal Police Station.

With the electoral battle for Patuakhali-2 expected to be a head-to-head race between the BNP’s Sahidul Alam Talukdar and Jamaat’s Shafiqul Islam, the local populace remains on edge as the shadow of further civil unrest looms over the upcoming polls.
