The Election Commission (EC) has released the final participation figures for the 13th national parliamentary election and concurrent referendums, conducted under a markedly new political reality following the recent rise of the student and youth movement.
On Friday, 13 February, the EC’s Public Relations Division reported that the nationwide voter turnout stood at 59.44%. The commission has described the robust and spontaneous participation of citizens as a positive indication of the country’s renewed democratic journey after more than a year and a half of political uncertainty.
This election marked a historic milestone as Bangladeshi expatriates were allowed to vote via postal ballots for the first time. Among overseas voters, the turnout was notably high, reaching 80.11%, signalling a strong engagement from the diaspora in national affairs.
According to EC data, the total number of registered voters for the 12 February election was 127,695,185, of whom a significant proportion—approximately 40 million—were young voters casting their ballot for the first time. This demographic has been highlighted as a key driver of the election’s dynamic turnout.
The postal ballot system also enabled participation by government officials on duty and inmates within correctional facilities, ensuring broader inclusivity. Among the votes received through this method, 70.25% were deemed valid.
Security was a paramount concern for the nationwide electoral process. To safeguard the polls across the country’s 299 constituencies, nearly 900,000 law enforcement personnel were deployed, encompassing police, paramilitary forces, and other security agencies.
The EC’s report emphasises that the election not only reflects the citizens’ active engagement but also the institutional readiness to conduct a transparent and inclusive democratic exercise, even under complex socio-political circumstances.
