At an age when most cricketers have long stepped away from the game’s most demanding formats, David Warner continues to redefine longevity and excellence in Twenty20 cricket. Now past 39 and widely considered to have moved beyond his prime, the Australian left-hander remains a prolific run-scorer, combining experience with undiminished hunger. His recent performances in the Big Bash League (BBL) for Sydney Thunder have once again underlined his enduring class and his standing as one of the format’s all-time greats.
Warner has produced three consecutive fifty-plus scores in the current BBL season, a feat that has drawn admiration across the cricketing world. On 3 January, he delivered a commanding unbeaten 130, one of the most dominant innings of this year’s tournament. That knock was followed by another assured display on 6 January, when he finished unbeaten on 67. Most recently, in Brisbane against Brisbane Heat, Warner added a fluent 82, anchoring his side’s innings with authority and control.
These three performances have taken Warner’s tally of fifty-plus scores in officially recognised T20 cricket to an unprecedented 124. No other batter in the history of the format has reached that mark, placing Warner alone at the summit of one of T20 cricket’s most significant consistency records. He has achieved this landmark across 430 innings, a testament not only to longevity but also to sustained impact at the highest level.
Warner’s closest challenger on this list is India’s Virat Kohli, whose reputation for consistency across formats is well established. Kohli has recorded 114 fifty-plus scores in T20 cricket, despite playing fewer innings than Warner. West Indies legend Chris Gayle, synonymous with power-hitting and spectacle, occupies third place, while Pakistan’s modern great Babar Azam and England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler complete the top five.
| Rank | Player | Innings Played | 50+ Scores | Centuries |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | David Warner | 430 | 124 | 8 |
| 2 | Virat Kohli | 397 | 114 | 8 |
| 3 | Chris Gayle | 455 | 110 | 22 |
| 4 | Babar Azam | 324 | 108 | 11 |
| 5 | Jos Buttler | 450 | 106 | 8 |
While Warner leads in overall fifty-plus scores, Gayle stands out for his dominance at the very top end, having struck a remarkable 22 T20 centuries, the most by any batter. Babar Azam’s efficiency is equally striking; he has reached the top five despite playing significantly fewer innings than his peers.
From a Bangladesh perspective, Tamim Iqbal remains the nation’s most successful batter in recognised T20 cricket, with 59 fifty-plus scores, including four centuries—figures that place him well ahead of his compatriots.
In an era increasingly defined by youth and innovation, Warner’s achievements serve as a reminder that experience, adaptability and relentless competitiveness can still prevail. His record-setting consistency ensures his legacy as one of the most complete and durable batters T20 cricket has ever seen.
