In a significant law enforcement operation in Chattogram’s Boalkhali upazila, joint security forces raided the residence of a local Awami League leader and arrested two brothers in possession of firearms and weapon-making equipment. The duo was subsequently handed over to the police for further legal action. The raid occurred late on Friday night in the Bengura area of the upazila.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Saiful Islam, 56, and Salahuddin Rumi, 51, both sons of the late Abul Bashar. Their elder brother, Belal Hossain, is the former chairman of Sarowatali Union and the current president of the union’s Awami League unit. The operation was conducted at his residence.
According to sources from the joint forces, a team from Boalkhali Army Camp, operating under the command of the 48th Air Defence Regiment of the Bangladesh Army, carried out the raid. During the operation, the two suspects attempted to escape by jumping into a nearby pond but were apprehended shortly afterwards. A thorough search of the premises led to the recovery of a substantial cache of weapons and equipment.

In a press release, Camp Commander Major Md. Rasel stated that both individuals had multiple previous cases filed against them related to firearms and were suspected of involvement in various acts of criminal activity, including the illegal manufacture and distribution of weapons.
Boalkhali Police Officer-in-Charge Mahfuzur Rahman confirmed, “The Army handed over the suspects to us following the operation. They were later presented before the court, which ordered their detention and subsequent imprisonment.”
The operation is being hailed locally as a significant step in curbing illegal arms activities in the region, and authorities have pledged to continue vigilant monitoring to ensure law and order.
