Wedding Dispute Regarding Sound System Sparks Violence in Madaripur Leaves Five Injured

A festive occasion turned violent in Madaripur’s Rajair on Friday when a disagreement over sound system arrangements at a wedding escalated into a clash that left five people injured and caused property damage. The incident occurred in West Rajair, Ward No. 5, during the marriage ceremony of local resident Shahid Sheikh’s daughter.

Both families had organised sound systems for the event. Following Friday prayers at a nearby mosque, Jahangir Khan, 45, former co-ordinator of the Rajair Upazila Chhatra Dal and a former Union Parishad member, reportedly approached the wedding party to request a reduction in volume, emphasising respect for the religious and social environment.

According to local sources, an argument ensued inside the mosque between Jahangir Khan and Ali Sheikh, 40, a representative of the bride’s side. The dispute quickly spilled outside, spreading into the surrounding Rajair market and Beparipara areas. From approximately 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, both groups reportedly engaged in violent confrontation, using bricks, sticks, and other improvised weapons.

During the clash, Ali Sheikh’s supporters allegedly damaged Jahangir Khan’s wooden workshop and two motorcycles. Shahid Sheikh claimed, “Jahangir was attempting to disrupt my daughter’s wedding. After prayers, he threatened my brother, and when we protested, his associates attacked us.” Jahangir Khan, however, said, “My only concern was the excessive noise. Our shop and motorcycles were vandalised, and our people were injured. We demand a fair investigation.”

Among the injured, BNP leader Badshah Mir, 50, sustained serious injuries and was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The remaining four received treatment at local clinics.

Sheikh Aminul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Rajair Police Station, confirmed that the situation, which had spread across two villages, is now under control. Additional police have been deployed, and both parties have been instructed to lodge formal complaints.
