The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) auction this season witnessed a storm of excitement when Chattogram Royals secured the services of opener Mohammad Naeem for a whopping 11 million Taka. The signing instantly became the talk of the cricketing community, with fans eager to see Naeem perform at the top of the order.
However, the euphoria was short-lived. Just a day before the tournament began, Triangular Services, the franchise owner, unexpectedly relinquished ownership of the Chattogram Royals. The decision sent shockwaves through the cricketing fraternity and raised pressing questions about the fate of contracted players, particularly regarding their payments.
The franchise had reportedly struggled to meet financial commitments, citing difficulties in paying players’ salaries and failing to secure the expected sponsorship deals. While contracts had been signed with both domestic and foreign players, the franchise could not fulfil its monetary obligations, prompting owner Abdul Kaiyum to formally notify the BPL Governing Council of their withdrawal from the league.
In response, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has stepped in to temporarily manage the team, ensuring that the league proceeds smoothly and that players receive their due compensation. Questions lingered over whether players like Naeem would receive their full salaries under the new arrangement.
Addressing these concerns, Iftikhar Rahman, Secretary of the BPL Governing Council, told the press:
“This morning, we met with all the players. Those who already have signed contracts will receive their payments. For players whose contracts were incomplete, we will be arranging new agreements to ensure they are fairly compensated.”
The BCB has also appointed a new management team for Chattogram Royals. Habibul Bashar has been named as the team mentor, while Mizanur Rahman will serve as head coach and Nafis Iqbal as team manager. These appointments aim to stabilise the franchise and maintain continuity for both players and staff.
