The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is anxiously awaiting a response from the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding its request to change venues for the upcoming T20 World Cup. With the tournament scheduled to commence on 7 February, BCB hopes that Bangladesh will be able to play outside India, potentially in co-host Sri Lanka, amid growing tensions.
If the request is denied, Bangladesh faces the grim possibility of forfeiting all group-stage matches, effectively exiting the tournament via walkovers. BCB officials believe a final decision from the ICC could arrive by Monday, though no response was received on Saturday despite the board’s full-day follow-up via email.
The impasse stems from the controversial exclusion of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League (IPL). Bangladesh has taken a firm stance, deeming the decision by Kolkata Knight Riders under instructions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as unacceptable. BCB maintains that the matter transcends an individual player, touching upon the country’s cricketing reputation and national pride.
A senior BCB director, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Jugantor: “At this point, we can only wait with hope. But it does not mean we are backing down. There is still a possibility that the ICC will take a positive decision and allow us to participate.”
Political tensions and diplomatic concerns have also influenced the sports arena. In response, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting recently decided to suspend IPL broadcasts within the country. Former captain Tamim Iqbal suggested that the BCB should have considered the long-term implications more carefully, prompting a heated exchange with a board director, who labelled Tamim an ‘agent of India’. This controversy has drawn criticism from current and former players, and the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWOAB) urged the director to apologise—though he has refused.
The following table summarises the current situation:
| Issue | Current Status | Implication |
|---|---|---|
| ICC Response | Pending | Decision expected by Monday |
| Venue Change | Requested (India → Sri Lanka) | Avoid forfeiting matches |
| Mustafizur Rahman IPL Controversy | Excluded by KKR/BCCI | Key reason for Bangladesh’s stance |
| Political/Diplomatic Tension | High | Affects cricket diplomacy and broadcasting |
The ICC is under pressure to resolve the impasse. Reports suggest ICC Chairman Jay Shah will hold an emergency meeting with BCCI officials to explore potential solutions. Indian media outlet NDTV has noted that a swift resolution appears unlikely, leaving Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup campaign hanging in the balance.
With the triad of the Mustafizur issue, BCB’s rigid position, and ICC’s pending decision, Bangladesh’s participation in the World Cup remains shrouded in uncertainty, casting a shadow over the nation’s cricketing ambitions.
