A striker’s primary job is to score goals. Clubs invest millions to ensure their forwards can flood the opposition’s net. But imagine being a striker and being asked not to score for your own team. It sounds unthinkable—but Robert Lewandowski faced precisely this peculiar situation at Barcelona.
The incident occurred towards the tail end of the 2022–23 La Liga season. Barcelona, though successful on the pitch, were grappling with a severe financial crisis off it. The league title had already been secured, but the club’s coffers were running dangerously low. Amid this backdrop, Lewandowski’s contract contained a bonus clause tied to goals: if he reached a certain tally in the league, Barcelona would have to pay his former club, Bayern Munich, a substantial sum.
By that point in the season, Lewandowski had netted 23 league goals. According to the contractual stipulation, just two more goals would trigger a €2.5 million payment to Bayern—roughly £2.2 million or about BDT 32 crore. With the league already won and finances stretched to breaking point, Barcelona’s executives reportedly made an informal, yet firm, request: Lewandowski should refrain from scoring further.
Recently, in an interview with Polish journalist Bogdan Rymanowski, Lewandowski himself confirmed the episode. He explained that the request was entirely financial and straightforward. “It was a bonus-related matter. Everyone knew Barcelona was fighting to save every euro at that time. The sum was not insignificant,” he said.
For a striker whose very mindset revolves around scoring, being asked not to find the net created an unusual and mentally taxing dilemma. Lewandowski admitted that the request stuck in his mind. Standing in the penalty area, the forward was forced to weigh a strange question: should he score, or hold back? Few professional footballers experience such a conflict.
Despite the odd circumstances, Lewandowski harboured no resentment. He respected the club and sought to understand the situation, recognising the financial pressure Barcelona were under. Nevertheless, this incident remains a poignant symbol of Barcelona’s extreme economic difficulties during that period and a unique footnote in football history.
