More than three years on, the 2022 FIFA World Cup final in Qatar continues to reverberate painfully through the psyche of French football. For many former French internationals, the dramatic defeat to Argentina was not merely a sporting loss but an emotional wound that has yet to heal. The latest and most forthright expression of this lingering anguish has come from Djibril Cissé, who has spoken with striking candour about his enduring resentment towards Argentina.
Cissé, who represented France at the 2002 and 2010 World Cups, recently revisited the Qatar final after watching a special feature published by the respected French sports daily L’Équipe. Rather than offering closure, the footage reignited feelings of anger and injustice. Speaking openly, the former striker admitted that the images stirred powerful emotions. Watching the match again, he said, left him overwhelmed with rage, confessing that it had fuelled a deep-seated hostility towards Argentina.
In an especially blunt assessment, Cissé went further by labelling Argentina as France’s “principal enemy”. In his view, the Qatar final transcended the boundaries of a single match. It represented an unresolved chapter—one that left unfinished business between the two footballing giants. The penalty shoot-out defeat, despite France’s resilience and Kylian Mbappé’s heroics, remains a bitter pill to swallow for those who felt the contest slipped away under cruel circumstances.
Looking ahead, Cissé has already identified the stage upon which he believes that score should be settled. He sees the 2026 World Cup as an opportunity for redemption and retribution. In a particularly pointed remark, he expressed the hope that France might secure a third World Cup star at the expense of Argentina, ideally in what could be Lionel Messi’s final appearance on football’s grandest stage. For Cissé, such an outcome would represent poetic justice and long-awaited closure.
His frustration, however, is not confined solely to events on the pitch. Cissé has also criticised aspects of Argentina’s conduct following their triumph in Qatar. He reserved particular condemnation for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández, following the emergence of a video featuring racially insensitive and derogatory chants directed at France. Cissé felt that Fernández’s subsequent apology and punishment were wholly inadequate.
As someone of Ivorian heritage, Cissé said he found it deeply troubling how swiftly Fernández was forgiven, particularly by his club teammates. To him, the episode highlighted broader issues of accountability within modern football, especially when questions of race, respect and responsibility are involved.
Despite enjoying a successful club career with sides such as Liverpool, Marseille and Lazio, Cissé’s international honours were limited. Nonetheless, he was part of France’s victorious squad at the 2003 Confederations Cup. His career has also been marked by off-field controversies, including personal and legal challenges that have frequently attracted media attention.
