Bangladesh secured a series victory against the Netherlands, yet one tactical decision has sparked discussion: in both matches, captain Litton Das chose to bowl first after winning the toss. The Bangladesh skipper, however, did not elaborate on his reasoning.
During a press conference after the second match, journalist Tanzid Hasan asked Tamim Iqbal about the unusual decision. With the team having recently worked under a new power-hitting coach, the question arose whether Bangladesh could have considered batting first instead.
Tamim responded diplomatically: “Why we chose to field after winning the toss is something the captain, coach, and team management can explain better. I’m not in a position to comment on that.”
Tamim clarified the thinking behind the decision, noting environmental factors: “Every team wants to utilise the home advantage. In the previous match, there was a lot of dew, which made batting easier later. The same thought process applied today. Dew might play a role. Since this was the series-deciding match, the captain, coach, and management considered these factors carefully. I have nothing further to add.”
He emphasised the importance of every international match: “Every match is significant for us because each one is an international game. There’s no distinction between big or small teams here. Every team in T20 cricket has an equal chance. Whoever plays well on the day will win. Looking ahead to the Asia Cup, if we continue the good form we’ve shown in this series, it will boost our confidence and benefit us in upcoming matches.”
Expanding on his perspective, Tamim said:“Honestly, there’s no concept of strong or weak teams here. T20 cricket is unpredictable. As I’ve said before, on any given day, whichever team plays better cricket will win. I never look at it in terms of team size or stature.”
| Match | Toss Winner | Decision | Outcome |
| 1st T20 vs Netherlands | Bangladesh (Litton Das) | Bowl first | Bangladesh won |
| 2nd T20 vs Netherlands | Bangladesh (Litton Das) | Bowl first | Bangladesh won |
Tamim’s statements underscore the team’s pragmatic approach to home conditions, match strategy, and the unpredictability of T20 cricket, emphasising that form and execution, not preconceived rankings, determine success.
