Why Local Coaches Dominate Dhaka Capitals’ Setup

As the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2025 approaches, Dhaka Capitals have already kicked off their pre-season preparations. While the team is led by one foreign head coach, Toby Radford, the remainder of the coaching staff is entirely domestic, highlighting the franchise’s reliance on homegrown expertise.

Speaking at a recent press conference, assistant coach Mahbub Ali Jacky elaborated on the team’s coaching philosophy. “Toby Radford is our sole foreign coach,” Jacky stated. “We may occasionally bring in foreign specialists as analysts, but the core of our coaching staff—physios, trainers and daily support personnel—is entirely local. They form the backbone of the team.”

Jacky emphasised the strategic and operational importance of domestic staff: “Physios and trainers are intimately familiar with our players’ physical conditions and individual requirements, which makes their contribution indispensable. Furthermore, our local staff have experience working with international-standard players, which is why the franchise has entrusted them with critical responsibilities. At the same time, this approach provides valuable opportunities for domestic coaches to develop their skills on an international level.”

He further explained the Capitals’ tactical approach: “We prepare multiple game plans tailored to different match situations. The coaching staff works closely with the captain to determine which plan is best suited for each opponent. Typically, we maintain two to three distinct strategies per opposing team. During matches, player positions and roles are adjusted in real-time to maximise effectiveness and respond to evolving circumstances on the field.”

This model balances international insight with local knowledge, allowing the Capitals to remain competitive while fostering the growth of homegrown coaching talent.

The table below summarises the coaching staff structure and responsibilities at Dhaka Capitals:

Staff Role Nationality Responsibilities
Toby Radford Foreign (UK) Head coach; overall strategy, technical guidance
Mahbub Ali Jacky Local Assistant coach; tactical planning, game strategy
Physio Team Local Player fitness, injury prevention, rehabilitation
Trainers Local Daily practice, strength & conditioning, performance optimisation
Analysts (occasional) Foreign Opposition analysis, tactical insights

By entrusting local staff with these key roles, Dhaka Capitals not only strengthen their squad but also provide domestic coaches with hands-on experience at a professional and international level. While the foreign head coach offers strategic oversight, it is the domestic coaching team that ensures players are physically prepared, tactically aware, and adaptable throughout the tournament.

The Capitals’ coaching philosophy demonstrates how local expertise and international insight can work hand in hand, benefiting both the team’s performance and the development of Bangladesh’s cricketing talent.
