In a dramatic turn of events in Cox’s Bazar, the widely reported murder of Jasim Uddin has taken an unexpected twist, with his wife, Selina Akter, now being charged as the prime suspect. Initially, Selina had filed a complaint accusing neighbours of brutally killing her husband in front of her eyes. However, months of police investigation have revealed a starkly different narrative.
On Friday, 23 January, at around 6:30 pm, Selina Akter was arrested by police from the PT School area in Cox’s Bazar town. Authorities allege that the murder was orchestrated to conceal an extramarital relationship, with Selina at the centre of the plot.
According to police and local sources, Jasim was found murdered at his home in the Segun Baghicha area of Jarulbunia, Shilkhali Union, on the night of 10 August last year. His bloodied body was recovered the following morning, bearing multiple sharp-force injuries across the body.
Initially, Selina lodged a complaint with Pekua Police Station, claiming that several neighbours had entered their home and attacked her husband due to prior disputes. She alleged that she had survived by hiding in an adjacent room. Based on this statement, police briefly detained several neighbours for questioning. However, investigators quickly noticed inconsistencies between Selina’s account, the crime scene evidence, and the physical state of the house.
Key findings from the police investigation included:
| Date | Event | Evidence / Findings | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 Aug 2025 | Murder of Jasim Uddin | Body found with multiple stab wounds | Initially, wife files complaint against neighbours |
| 11 Aug 2025 | Complaint lodged | Selina alleges neighbours responsible | Inconsistencies noticed in statement vs scene |
| Sep 2025 | Investigation deepens | Mobile phone records and local intelligence analysed | Extramarital affair with Abdur Razzak uncovered |
| 23 Jan 2026 | Arrest of Selina Akter | PT School area, Cox’s Bazar | 7-day remand sought; other suspects at large |
Investigators discovered no signs of forced entry, and discrepancies in Selina’s account raised further suspicions. Analysis of mobile phone call logs, digital evidence, and secret local intelligence revealed a close relationship between Selina and a local man, Abdur Razzak. Police suspect that Jasim became aware of this relationship on the night of his murder, which may have triggered the fatal attack.
Sub-Inspector Sunayan Barua, leading the investigation, commented: “The initial complaint did not match the forensic and circumstantial evidence. Alternative possibilities were carefully examined.”
Approximately one month and a week after the incident, Jasim’s father, Nur Ahmad, filed a fresh murder case naming Selina Akter as the prime accused, along with her alleged accomplice Abdur Razzak and several others. Analysis of testimonies, prior inconsistencies, and technical evidence confirmed that the original complaint was misleading.
Pekua Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khairul Alam stated that Selina has been presented in court and a seven-day remand has been requested. Operations to apprehend the remaining fugitives are ongoing.
