Salma Islam, who was beaten and detained in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, has been sent to jail after being shown arrested in the July attempted murder case. The order was given yesterday, Friday, by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Partha Bhadra.
When she was presented in court, Sub-Inspector Anwar Mia of Dhanmondi Model Police Station stated that she is being held in custody in connection with the attempted murder case of Abu Said Mu. Saim, a third-year BBA student at European University.
Salma Islam’s lawyer, Abul Hossain Patowary, applied for bail, which the court rejected.
Earlier, on Thursday around 11:30 am, Salma Islam was beaten during vandalism at Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s house on Dhanmondi 32nd Street. She was rescued and taken into police custody.
According to the case, on 19 July last year, around 10:45 am, Said participated in a rally on Satmasjid Road under Dhanmondi Police Station, where he was shot in the back. A case was filed at Dhanmondi Model Police Station on 1 December last year regarding the incident.
After her arrest, Md. Tarek Rahman, Secretary of ‘Am Jonota Dal,’ posted on Facebook: ‘The woman who was beaten by a mob has been shown as an accused in the July attempted murder case and sent to jail. The investigating officer stated that she was named in this case on the orders of the sirs. Upon checking the case file, her name was not previously listed. After being attacked by a mob, the police have shown her arrested in the July attempted murder case.’
