Renowned Indian singer-songwriter Kabir Suman has withdrawn his decision to donate his body after death, a pledge he made nearly four years ago.
The veteran artist, known for his deep influence on contemporary Bangla music, had previously signed a declaration committing to body donation.
In a Facebook post today (March 5), Kabir Suman wrote, “Ramzan Mubarak. I want to inform everyone that some time ago, I had announced on this very platform that I had donated my body and did not wish for any religious funeral rites. After much thought, I have changed my decision. I am withdrawing my intention to donate my body. I will not donate my body.”
“I wish to be buried in Kolkata’s soil, preferably in Gobra, according to Islamic rites. This is my final decision. I have informed a few of my close relatives,” he added.
Kabir Suman rose to fame in 1992 with his landmark album Tomake Chai, which revolutionized modern Bangla music. His popularity spans both West Bengal, India, and Bangladesh, where he remains a revered figure.
Beyond music, he also had a stint in politics. He actively supported the Nandigram and Singur movements and later joined Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC), winning a parliamentary seat from Jadavpur. However, due to differences, he eventually parted ways with the party.
Born Suman Chattopadhyay, he later converted to Islam and adopted the name Kabir Suman. He was born on March 16, 1949, in Odisha, India.
