World Cup Concern for Argentina After Romero Injury

Argentina have been handed a significant injury scare ahead of the upcoming World Cup following a worrying setback to key defender Cristian Romero, who was forced off during Tottenham Hotspur’s narrow 1–0 defeat to Sunderland in the Premier League.

The incident occurred on Sunday at the Stadium of Light, where Tottenham endured a disappointing evening both in result and personnel. Romero, a cornerstone of Argentina’s World Cup-winning defence, suffered the injury in the 70th minute after an aerial collision with Sunderland goalkeeper Antonín Kinský.

Although the full extent of the injury has not yet been confirmed, the 27-year-old was unable to continue and left the pitch visibly affected. However, there was a slight sense of relief for Tottenham and Argentina as Romero was able to walk off unaided and did not require a stretcher. He was consoled by teammates as he made his way to the touchline.

The collision also left Sunderland goalkeeper Kinský with a head knock, though he was able to continue after receiving treatment and played the remainder of the match with a bandage.

The injury has triggered concern within the Argentina national setup, with the World Cup set to begin in June. Romero has been a central figure in manager Lionel Scaloni’s defensive structure, playing a crucial role in Argentina’s recent international success and emerging as one of their most reliable defenders.

Tottenham’s head coach Roberto De Zerbi expressed concern after the match but urged caution before jumping to conclusions.

“At this moment, Romero’s injury is very disappointing,” he said. “We do not yet have a clear diagnosis. He will be monitored over the next few days. We hope it is not serious, because he is a very important player for us and we need him until the end of the season.”

The defeat further compounded Tottenham’s struggles in the Premier League. The club currently sits 18th in the table, dangerously close to the relegation zone, and remains two points behind 17th-placed West Ham United. With only six matches left in the season, pressure is mounting on the squad to secure survival.

Argentina’s World Cup Build-Up Under Threat

Argentina are scheduled to begin their World Cup campaign on 16 June at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City against Algeria. Romero’s fitness will now be closely monitored in the coming weeks, with his potential absence posing a significant tactical concern for Scaloni.

His importance to Argentina’s defensive line cannot be overstated, particularly given his physical presence, aerial ability, and leadership at the back. Any prolonged absence would force a major reshuffle just weeks before the start of a major international tournament.

For now, both Tottenham and Argentina await further medical assessments, hoping the injury proves to be precautionary rather than serious.
