Barcelona’s hopes of reclaiming the top spot in La Liga were dashed after a dramatic 2-1 defeat against Girona in the Catalan derby. A missed penalty by Lamine Yamal and a late strike from Girona substitute Fran Beltrán proved decisive, leaving Barcelona two points behind leaders Real Madrid.
The match, played on Monday at Girona’s home ground, was closely contested throughout. Girona secured all three points in the 86th minute when Beltrán curled a low shot into the net, easing relegation fears for the hosts. Prior to the decisive goal, Barcelona defender Jules Koundé was involved in a disputed foul, but a brief review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) upheld the goal.
Girona were temporarily reduced to ten men late in the match when substitute Joel Roca was shown a straight red card for a reckless tackle on Yamal. Despite the numerical advantage, Barcelona failed to equalise. This marked only the third defeat for Barcelona in the league against Girona this season.
From the outset, Girona took the initiative, while Barcelona appeared sluggish, squandering several clear chances. Yamal had two opportunities close-range and also struck the post from a first-half penalty, keeping the scores level at halftime.
In the 59th minute, Koundé’s cross from the right found Barcelona centre-back Pau Cubarsí, who headed the ball into the net for his first league goal for the club, giving Barcelona the lead. However, Girona responded just two minutes later, with Thomas Lemar tapping in a simple finish from Vladislav Vanat’s pass, marking his second consecutive match on the scoresheet.
Shortly after, in the 71st minute, Viktor Tsyhankov’s header was ruled out for a foul despite the goalkeeper failing to secure the ball. Girona eventually went ahead in the 86th minute, with Beltrán’s precise shot finding the bottom corner. Barcelona contested a foul on Koundé during the build-up, but the goal stood.
The victory ended Girona’s three-match winless run and lifted them to 12th place in the league, five points clear of the relegation zone. Barcelona, meanwhile, saw their three-game winning streak come to an end, leaving the title race more open than ever.
