Hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic young Catholics gave Pope Leo XIV a jubilant, almost rock-star reception on Saturday evening during an open-air prayer vigil on the outskirts of Rome. The Pope arrived dramatically by helicopter to the “Jubilee of Youth” celebration, igniting cheers, tears, and applause across the massive crowd.

Spectacular Papal Arrival

Event Detail Description
Arrival Method White military helicopter

“The pope is here!” exclaimed a voice over the loudspeaker — a moment met with thunderous applause.

With a broad smile, Pope Leo, the first-ever American pontiff at age 69, waved from his popemobile to lines of excited youth, many of whom had spent the day in the sweltering sun, immersed in music, prayer, and companionship.

From Festive to Reflective

As dusk settled, the mood shifted from celebration to solemn contemplation. Pope Leo carried a large wooden cross to the stage and addressed the young pilgrims with reverence:

“Dear young people, after walking, praying and sharing these days of grace of the Jubilee dedicated to you, we now gather together in the light of the advancing evening to keep vigil together.”

A Catholic ‘Woodstock’

The vigil bore comparisons to a spiritual Woodstock, with pilgrims camping out across a site the size of 70 football fields (over 500,000 square metres). The setting included:

Feature Details
Stage Design Towering cross and golden arch dominating the field
Entertainment Nearly 24 musical and dance acts, mostly religious-themed
Facilities Blankets, cushions, umbrellas dotted across the area
Crowd Activities Guitar-playing, singing, resting in the sun

Julie Mortier, 18, from France, croaked happily after hours of shouting and singing:

“We’re too happy to be here! Seeing the pope — that’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!”

Andy Hewellyn, a British student, said:

“Even though I’m far from the pope, it’s worth it. The main thing is that we’re all together.”

Security and Volunteer Support

Personnel Numbers
Volunteers Over 4,300
Police Officers More than 1,000

Organisers confirmed that the vigil was carried out under tight security protocols to manage the enormous crowd.

Overnight Camp and Sunday Mass

Most pilgrims planned to camp overnight, preparing for the Sunday morning mass, which will be led by Pope Leo and will mark the culmination of the Jubilee of Youth, a highlight of the Church’s Holy Year.

This youth pilgrimage marks:

  • Nearly three months since Pope Leo began his papacy
  • 25 years since the last large youth gathering in Rome under Pope John Paul II

Journey and Preparation

Earlier on Saturday, thousands of young people walked from central Rome to Tor Vergata, after filling water bottles, applying sunscreen, and adjusting backpacks for the 24-hour event.

Preparation Essentials Water bottles, sunscreen, backpacks, sleeping gear
Conditions Hot temperatures under the sun
Atmosphere Excitement, spiritual anticipation, community bonding

Victoria Perez, 21, carrying a Spanish flag, was thrilled:

“It’s the first time I’m going to see him, and I can’t wait.”

Quentin Remaury, 26, from France, was inspired by Pope Francis’s 2016 message to youth in Krakow:

“He told us to ‘get off your couches.’ That really gave me a boost.”

Confessionals at Circus Maximus

Earlier in the week, confession was offered at the historic Circus Maximus, where:

Setup Detail
Priests Available Around 1,000
Temporary Confessionals 200 white gazebos lining the ancient Roman hippodrome

Pilgrims Amid Global Challenges

This youth pilgrimage unfolds against a backdrop of:

  • Economic uncertainty
  • Climate change
  • Ongoing wars, including participation from youth hailing from Syria and Ukraine

Samarei Semos, 29, from Belize, who travelled for three days, shared her hopes:

“I hope Pope Leo speaks strongly about the realities in third-world countries.”

Tragic Death and Papal Compassion

Before the vigil, Pope Leo privately met and prayed with companions of an 18-year-old Egyptian pilgrim, who tragically passed away from a heart attack on Friday night while returning by bus from an event.

Official Messages

  • Italian PM Giorgia Meloni welcomed the young pilgrims via video:

“Praying, singing, joking amongst themselves, celebrating in an extraordinary party.”
