Young Man Brutally Mutilated After Being Tied to Electric Pole, Two Jamaat Workers Arrested

A shocking act of violence has rocked Chapainawabganj’s Shibganj upazila, where a 22-year-old man was brutally assaulted, tied to an electric pole, and hacked with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured and fighting for survival. Doctors have confirmed that both of his hands and one leg were almost completely severed in the attack, underscoring the extreme brutality of the incident.

The victim, Abu Sufian, son of Rabiul Islam from Bajitpur village, was first rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in a critical condition. Due to the severity of his injuries and the need for specialised orthopaedic care, he was later transferred to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), commonly known as Pangu Hospital, in Dhaka.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening in the Umarpur Ghat area of Shibganj. According to the victim’s family, the attack stemmed from a dispute involving the harassment of a teenage female relative. Sufian’s mother alleged that local activists affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, carried out the assault after Sufian protested against the harassment.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Abu Sufian recounted that he attempted to reason with the attackers, explaining that a young man had been repeatedly harassing his teenage relative. Despite his pleas, he was overpowered, tied to an electric pole, and mercilessly attacked with sharp weapons. “They did not listen to a single word,” he said, adding that he begged for his life, insisting he had done nothing wrong.

Sufian’s mother, Sufia Begum, further explained that the same teenage girl had been abducted days earlier by a local youth. Police later rescued the girl and arrested the accused, who was subsequently released on bail. After his release, the youth allegedly resumed harassing the girl. On Wednesday afternoon, Sufian confronted him at Umarpur Ghat and warned him to stop. At that point, several local men—including Abdul Razzak and Shah Alam—allegedly sided with the accused youth and launched the attack.

The assailants reportedly tied Sufian to an electric pole in front of Razzak’s pharmacy and carried out the assault in public view. “My son folded his hands and begged them not to kill him,” Sufia Begum said tearfully. “But they showed no mercy and continued hacking him.”

Following the incident, Sufian’s father filed a case at Shibganj Police Station on Thursday night, naming three individuals and accusing an additional 12 to 15 unidentified persons. Police later arrested Shah Alam (22) and his brother Abdul Razzak (23), both residents of Shyampur Khochpara village. Razzak is reportedly a madrasa teacher and the owner of the pharmacy where the attack took place.

However, Shibganj Upazila Jamaat Ameer Sadiqul Islam denied any organisational involvement, claiming the incident was being used to politically malign Jamaat ahead of elections. He asserted that Jamaat workers were not responsible and said local residents had formed a human chain in protest against the violence.

Rajshahi Medical College Hospital’s emergency department in-charge, Dr Shankar K. Biswas, confirmed that Sufian had already undergone one surgery and would require multiple additional procedures. He clarified that the family transferred the patient to Dhaka on medical advice due to limited resources at the Rajshahi facility.

Shibganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Humayun Kabir stated that investigations are ongoing and that efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspects.
