A tragic incident occurred on Sunday, 15 March, around 1:00 pm in the Bathuli Bus Stand area of Dhamrai Upazila, Dhaka, where a young man lost his life after coming into contact with an electric current.
The deceased, Chanowar Hossain, aged 25, was a resident of Mohongonj in Bera Upazila, Pabna, and the son of Md. Rezaul Hossain. He worked as a garment factory labourer and, due to his employment, was living as a tenant at the home of Md. Sohrab in Bathuli.
According to his maternal cousin, Md. Harun, Chanowar suffered severe injuries after accidentally touching a live electrical wire at the house. He was immediately rushed to the Manikganj 250-Bed General Hospital for treatment.
Hospital officials, however, confirmed that Chanowar had passed away before arrival. The body has been preserved at the hospital for post-mortem examination.
Confirming the incident to the media, Sub-Inspector (SI) Hafizur Rahman of Manikganj Sadar Police Station stated, “The exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem report is available. However, preliminary indications suggest that the death was due to electrocution.”

Local sources have highlighted that the Bathuli area contains ageing and exposed electrical wiring, which poses a frequent hazard to residents. The community has urged authorities to undertake urgent repairs and implement safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Residents emphasised that minor electric shocks and occasional injuries have been reported previously due to poorly maintained wires. Local authorities and the electricity provider have been called upon to inspect and upgrade the infrastructure to ensure public safety.
Chanowar Hossain was the only son in his family, and his sudden death has left his relatives devastated. They have appealed to the local administration and electricity authorities for a thorough investigation and appropriate compensation.
Police sources indicated that the incident underscores the urgent need for safer electrical installations in residential areas. Authorities are coordinating with the local electricity board to identify hazards and prevent future tragedies, highlighting the importance of both public awareness and infrastructural safety.
This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by neglected electrical systems and the need for proactive measures to protect communities.
