Police in Moulvibazar have arrested three individuals in connection with the fatal stabbing of 24-year-old Tarek Ahmed, following an altercation during a local cricket game in Rajnagar.
The suspects were taken into custody on Monday night (2 March) from Khulshi Police Station in Chattogram District, authorities confirmed.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on 25 February at approximately 5:30 pm in the Ghorgaon village area of Rajnagar Sadar Union, near Balidighi’s southern bank. A group of young men were playing cricket when a verbal dispute erupted between the victim, Tarek Ahmed, and his neighbour, 22-year-old Atik Ahmed.
The disagreement quickly escalated, with Atik and two accomplices allegedly attacking Tarek with a sharp-edged weapon. He suffered multiple stab wounds to his hands, thighs, and legs. Emergency services transported him to Rajnagar Upazila Health Complex, but as his condition worsened, he was moved to Moulvibazar 250-Bed Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Following the tragedy, Tarek’s elder sister, Selina Jannat Suma, filed a murder complaint at Rajnagar Police Station on 26 February.
Acting on the complaint, police conducted a late-night operation in Motijharna Colony, Khulshi, Chattogram, on Monday. They arrested the three individuals named in the case:
| Name | Age | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Mehedi Hasan Atik | 22 | Suspect |
| Shobuj Mia | 26 | Suspect |
| Riyad Mia | 21 | Suspect |
Md. Farid Uddin Ahmed Bhuiya, Officer-in-Charge of Rajnagar Police Station, stated that the suspects were brought to Rajnagar Police Station on 3 March for further investigation. He added that efforts to recover the murder weapon—a knife—are ongoing.
Police have assured that the investigation will continue, emphasising their commitment to bringing all responsible parties to justice. The incident has shocked the local community, highlighting concerns over safety and youth violence in village recreational spaces.
