A tragic incident unfolded near Dhaka’s central Shaheed Minar on Sunday evening, 15 March, when 25-year-old Md. Rakib succumbed to injuries sustained in a violent attack. Rakib was reportedly shot and stabbed by assailants, later dying while receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
According to reports, the attack occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. in the Shaheed Minar area. Witnesses stated that three to four unidentified individuals targeted Rakib, shooting him in the head before stabbing him in the left side of his abdomen. Bystanders immediately intervened, rescuing the severely injured victim and transporting him to DMCH’s One-Stop Emergency Centre, where he was declared dead around 10:30 p.m.
Md. Faruk, Officer-in-Charge of the DMCH Police Camp, confirmed Rakib’s death and stated that investigations are ongoing to identify all perpetrators.
Rakib, a resident of Shahbagh’s Shivbari Staff Quarter, was the son of Md. Khokon. He worked professionally as a content creator. His sudden and violent death has shocked the local community, leaving friends and family in mourning.
Eyewitness Md. Ishan recounted the harrowing moments of the attack:
“Suddenly, three to four men attacked Rakib. They shot him in the head and then stabbed him in the left side of his stomach before fleeing. We, along with other bystanders, rushed him to the hospital, but unfortunately, he could not be saved.”
The shooting caused panic among pedestrians in the vicinity of the Shaheed Minar. Locals immediately called for help, and bystanders assisted in transporting Rakib to the hospital.
Masud Alam, Deputy Commissioner of the Ramna Division, confirmed that authorities have so far arrested one suspect in connection with the incident. He added that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances and identify all individuals involved in the attack.
