Young Woman Killed in Shark Attack in Australia, Another Seriously Injured

A young woman has died after being attacked by a shark while swimming at a remote beach in New South Wales, Australia. Another young man was seriously injured in the same incident. The attack took place at Kylie’s Beach in Crowdy Bay National Park, around 300 kilometres north of Sydney.

Police stated that the deceased woman was believed to be in her twenties and died at the scene. The injured man, also thought to be in his twenties, was airlifted to a hospital in Newcastle in critical condition.

Paramedics arrived early Thursday morning after receiving reports of the attack. Authorities praised the bravery of a witness who tied an improvised tourniquet to the injured man’s leg before paramedics arrived. NSW Ambulance Superintendent Josh Smith said this action likely played a crucial role in saving his life.

Following the incident, the beach was temporarily closed. Police are working with experts from the Department of Primary Industries to identify the species of shark involved. Smart drumlines are also being deployed to locate and tag sharks. Surf Life Saving NSW has announced that neighbouring beaches will also remain closed for the next 24 hours during drone surveillance.

Steve Pearce, Chief Executive of Surf Life Saving NSW, described the incident as a tragic event and expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased woman and the injured man. He urged the public to stay out of the water in the area and follow lifeguard instructions.

This marks the fifth fatal shark attack in Australia this year. Three months earlier, a rare shark attack at a northern Sydney beach claimed the life of another individual.
