Youth Beaten by Mob in Nabinagar Over Alleged Desecration of the Qur’an

A youth was beaten by locals after he allegedly set fire to copies of the Holy Qur’an at Barikhola Madhyapara Multipurpose Hafizia Madrasa in Laur Fatehpur Union of Nabinagar upazila in Brahmanbaria. The incident occurred on Friday (28 November) afternoon.

The accused, Baizid Ahmed (32), is the son of Khoka Member of Barikhola village. Locals stated that he had long been addicted to drugs and was mentally unstable. In recent days, he had also been making inappropriate remarks about the Qur’an.

According to eyewitnesses, Baizid entered the madrasa in the afternoon and took several copies of the Qur’an from an almirah before setting them on fire. Teachers and locals rushed to the spot and caught him immediately. Enraged by the incident, residents physically assaulted him. Police later arrived, rescued Baizid, and took him first to the upazila health complex and then to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital.

Nabinagar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Shahinur Islam confirmed the incident, saying that the mob assaulted him in anger over hurting religious sentiments. Police ensured his treatment. No written complaint has been filed yet; appropriate legal action will be taken upon receiving one.
