Youth Instrumental Music Festival Celebrates Tradition

In a vibrant celebration of Indian classical music and a platform to nurture emerging talent, the “Yuva Vadya Sangeet Utsav” was recently held at Shishir Mancha. Organised under the banner of the Ninth Mangalacharana Sangeet Conference, the festival showcased the virtuosity of young instrumentalists under the age of 30, highlighting the rich legacy of India’s classical music while inspiring the next generation of performers.

The festival featured a series of enthralling duets, where audiences in Kolkata were treated to exceptional musical artistry. Among the standout performances was the sitar and sarod duet by Snehesh Nag and Swarnendu Mondal, who rendered the evocative Raag Jayjayanti. Accompanying them on tabla was Anjishnu Mukherjee, whose rhythmic finesse enhanced the duo’s lyrical expressions.

Another captivating performance came from the slide guitar and esraj pairing of Soham Maity and Siddhajit Mondal, presenting Raag Kirwani. Rohen Basu provided tabla accompaniment, weaving intricate rhythmic patterns that complemented the melodic interplay.

The sarod duet by Arka Ray and Saunak Ray was a highlight of the evening, with spellbinding renditions of Raag Madhubanti and Raag Shri. Their performance, underscored by Sudip Chakraborty on tabla, received resounding appreciation from the audience for its technical brilliance and emotive depth.

Finally, the bansuri and santoor duet performed by Bonani Das and Sharanya Sarkar, featuring Raag Emon, mesmerised listeners with its serene and soulful tones. Sohan Ghosh provided tabla accompaniment, adding a rhythmic layer that beautifully complemented the delicate melodic textures.

The festival not only celebrated the virtuosity of India’s young musicians but also reinforced the continuity of its classical music traditions. Audiences were treated to a masterclass in duet performance, where melodic conversation between instruments, combined with sensitive rhythmic support, created an unforgettable evening of music.
