In a significant disciplinary action, Faruk Hossain Bapari, convener of the Madaripur district unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Jubo Dal, has been suspended from all positions following allegations that he and his associates provided armed guarding to the residence and businesses of controversial Awami League leader Shahjahan Khan and his family.
The suspension was confirmed on Tuesday, 23 December, in a press release issued by Minhajul Islam Bhuiya, Deputy Secretary of the BNP Jubo Dal Central Executive Committee. This followed a three-day showcause notice served to Faruk Hossain on Sunday, 21 December, requesting an explanation for his alleged actions.
According to the press release, all positions held by Faruk Hossain Bapari, from primary membership to district convener, have been suspended. The decision has been implemented by BNP Jubo Dal Central Executive Committee President Abdul Monayem Munna and General Secretary Mohammad Nurul Islam Noyon.
The controversy emerged after protests were held in Madaripur on Saturday, 20 December, against the killing of Osman Hadi. Social media calls circulated urging demonstrators to besiege Shahjahan Khan’s residence and his brothers’ business establishments, creating concern among the local populace.
Allegedly, under Faruk Hossain’s leadership, at least 50 Jubo Dal activists guarded Shahjahan Khan’s ten-storey residence in front of Chanmari Mosque, along with four family-owned properties, a residential hotel, a restaurant, and a petrol station, from morning until late afternoon. Photographs of these activities circulated widely on social media, sparking public criticism and prompting the central Jubo Dal leadership to intervene.
Meanwhile, Shahjahan Khan and his son, Asibur Rahman Asib Khan, remain in custody. Although most family members are absconding, their business operations—including transport services, a residential hotel, a petrol station, and other enterprises—continue to function in Madaripur.
Faruk Hossain Bapari has denied the allegations, claiming they are “false and fabricated.” He asserted that none of his associates went near Shahjahan Khan’s properties and described the suspension as premature, stating he has yet to receive formal notification of the decision.
