Police have arrested two local leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami following the vandalism and looting of a business owned by a youth political leader in Sirajganj. Ullapara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sakiul Azam confirmed the arrests on Sunday.
The detained individuals are Abdul Alim Sardar, Amir of Udhnia Union Jamaat, and Abdul Kader Khandakar, Secretary of the same union.
According to reports, the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday at Gazail Bazar in Ullapara’s Udhnia Union. Abdul Latif, Joint General Secretary of the Udhnia Union unit of the Jubo Dal, alleged that a group of Jamaat activists attacked his shop. Following the incident, Latif filed a complaint at Ullapara Model Police Station against 10 to 12 individuals.
The police case states that the attack was motivated by prior political grievances. On Thursday, in the parliamentary elections for Sirajganj-4 constituency, Jamaat-e-Islami’s nominated candidate Rafiqul Islam Khan secured victory. In retaliation, the assailants reportedly vandalised Latif’s shop and looted cash from the premises.
OC Sakiul Azam said law enforcement teams conducted targeted operations in the Udhnia Union on Saturday evening, leading to the arrest of the two Jamaat leaders. They were subsequently presented before a local court on Sunday morning.
The incident underscores growing tensions between political factions in Sirajganj, with youth wing members often at the frontline of post-election disputes. Authorities have assured that further investigations are underway to apprehend any additional suspects involved in the attack.
