Zaharan Mamdani Wins Mayoral Election in the City of Immigrants

November 4 was an exciting day. Elections were held across various states. All eyes were on democratic socialist Zaharan Mamdani. He won by a large margin. In a densely populated city like New York, he has become the youngest Muslim immigrant mayor in history.

Mamdani will fight for ordinary people so they can afford housing, buy food and essential goods, and access public transport at reasonable costs. This serves as a lesson for capitalist societies. Interestingly, last year President Trump also won the public’s favor by promising affordable goods and prioritizing America.

Mamdani is not just about rhetoric. He plans to raise taxes on the wealthy by only two percent to provide these opportunities for the poor. Although some wealthy people may leave the city, the vacant spaces they leave can be developed into affordable housing. This will balance income and expenditure. Trying to thrive alone while ignoring the well-being of others is a ridiculous folly. After his victory, he stated, ‘This city is built by immigrants, for immigrants.’

Former President Obama passed the Affordable Care Act, ensuring accessible healthcare for all. Efforts are underway to repeal this bill to reduce taxes for the wealthy. The budget has not been approved, and government operations are at the longest shutdown in history. The SNAP program is suspended, potentially cutting off nutritious meals for low-income people. Even if it resumes, it may be delayed or limited. In this scenario, progressive leaders like Mamdani are crucial.

Just before the election, a restaurant owner asked him whether he would volunteer to provide a meal for the poor since the SNAP program was suspended. Mamdani smiled and replied, “Absolutely.” Obama has supported him. He has a long journey ahead.

On November 4, other historic events also occurred. Abigail Spanberger became Virginia’s first female governor from the Democratic Party. From the same party, J. Jones was elected Attorney General. New Jersey’s governor is Nikki Sheryl. California’s Prop 50 passed with 64 percent of the vote, granting five additional seats in Congress.

Hope remains for the triumph of humanity. History repeatedly shows that compassionate people prevail.
