Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday congratulated Moldova’s pro-European Union ruling party on its victory in the country’s parliamentary elections, emphasising that Moscow’s efforts to interfere had come to nothing.
Speaking via video link to a conference in Warsaw, Poland, Zelensky asserted that Russia had invested enormous resources in attempts to sway the electoral process but ultimately failed.
In his words: “Russia failed to destabilise Moldova even after spending huge, huge resources to undermine it and to corrupt whoever they could.”
Moldova, a former Soviet republic, has long found itself at the centre of geopolitical rivalry between Moscow and Brussels. Its current pro-EU leadership has sought deeper integration with Europe, a course that Russia has repeatedly opposed.
Zelensky’s remarks signal not only support for Moldova’s democratic process but also reflect Ukraine’s broader strategy of rallying European unity against Russian influence operations.
The outcome of Moldova’s elections is likely to further strengthen ties with the European Union, while also highlighting the resilience of smaller Eastern European states in the face of Russian political and financial interference.
