Zelensky to Meet Starmer in London on Saturday, Confirms UK Prime Minister’s Office

LONDON, 1 March 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet UK Prime Minister Keith Starmer in London on Saturday, a day before a summit bringing together 12 European leaders in the British capital, the Prime Minister’s Office has confirmed.

“The Prime Minister and President Zelensky will be meeting at Downing Street this afternoon,” a spokeswoman stated, as British media broadcast images of a plane bearing the Ukrainian flag landing at an airport north of London.

The meeting comes at a critical moment for Ukraine, as the war with Russia continues to shape the European security landscape. Britain has been one of Ukraine’s most steadfast allies since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022, providing military aid, intelligence support, and diplomatic backing.

Zelensky’s visit is expected to focus on strengthening military assistance, securing further economic aid, and discussing long-term security agreements with the UK and its European partners. The timing of the summit underscores the increasing urgency among European leaders to coordinate their response to the ongoing war, particularly as concerns grow over the future of Western support amid shifting political dynamics in the United States.

Additional Context

Since the start of the conflict, the UK has played a significant role in arming Ukrainian forces, supplying advanced weaponry, and training troops. However, with changing leadership in both the UK and the US, there is growing speculation about potential shifts in policy. Starmer’s stance on Ukraine has been firm, though questions remain about the extent to which Britain can sustain its level of military aid given domestic economic challenges.

Meanwhile, Zelensky has been making diplomatic visits across Europe in an effort to secure commitments for continued support. The upcoming summit in London will likely focus on European defence strategies, economic resilience, and the broader geopolitical consequences of the conflict.
